APPPA ENCOURAGES AND SUPPORTS FILIPINO PRE-MED STUDENTS
If you are an aspiring medical student with Filipino heritage, APPPA members can provide pre-medical advice, counseling, and recommendation letters to deserving and qualified pre-medical students. We can also give you insight into what it takes to get into medical school. Once accepted into medical school, the majority of students will graduate. The biggest hurdle to overcome is getting accepted into medical school.
There are many requirements to get into medical school. The main items looked are: 1. GPA 2. MCAT score 3. Recommendation letters. 4. Extracurricular activities showing a candidate has a humanitarian caring aspect to his/her personality and not just a high IQ. 5. Experience in a healthcare setting (i.e. you can volunteer in a hospital to gain experience if you have never worked in a healthcare setting). 6. Personal interview.
Though medical school can be very expensive, never let the high tuition cost discourage you. You will make enough money as a physician to pay off your debts. Alternatively, you can agree to serve the military or government underserved areas to repay your student loans.
If you do not get accepted the first time, do NOT be discouraged. Continue your education or get a medical research job and build up your resume/CV for the next time around. There are many types of 'medical schools'. These include Allopathic (M.D.) schools, Osteopathic (D.O.) schools, and foreign medical schools. If you are a U.S. citizen you can opt to attend a foreign medical school and then return and pass the U.S. medical exams to get into a U.S. medical residency program. The bottom line is that if you are intelligent, really work hard, and are very determined, you can get into some sort of medical school.
Remember if and when you graduate from medical school - never forget our homeland the Philippines. You will have so much to offer economically disadvantaged Filipinos through medical missions or volunteering to teach in medical schools in the Philippines.
